Vintage Rock T-shirts (Paperback) $26.73 These artifacts of the original rock and roll era recall a time that seems simpler, less commercial, and more meaningful. The tee shirts shown here weren`t produced for commercial use but as promotional giveaways by record companies, fans, and festivals such as Woodstock, and the designs from the early days look homemade and amateurish. As band shirts became available, record companies discovered the promotional power of the tee shirt as human billboard, and their lucrative potential was realized, with shirts bearing logos, band names, show venues, and other marketable details. Ultimately rock tee shirts worn with jeans and sneakers became a uniform of conformist non-conformism. Now the tee shirts from these early days have become one of today`s hottest—and most costly—fashion trends. For many people, rock and roll has become a lifestyle. Vintage Rock Tee-Shirts is a snapshot of this earlier era, with hundreds of T-shirts, advertisements, logos, and archival photos. |

1980s In Fashion $53.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! While in the 1970s, the silhouette of fashion tended to be characterized by close fitting clothes on top with wider, looser clothes on the bottom, this trend completely reversed itself in the early 1980s as both men and women began to wear looser shirts and tight, close-fitting pants. Men wore power suits as a result of the greater tendency for people to display their wealth. Brand names became increasingly important in this decade, making Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein household names. During the Like A Virgin era, Madonna was titled the “Material Girl” and many young girls around the world looked to her for fashion statements. The popular 1983 movie Flashdance made ripped sweatshirts well-known in the general public. The television shows Dallas and, in particular, Dynasty also had a similar impact, especially in the area of the increasingly oversized shoulder pads. |

70s: The Decade That Style Forgot $2.65 A staggering collection of 1970s fashion faux pas, from torso-clinging disco shirts to billowing bell bottoms. Mothers in hot pants, dads in leisure suits, children subjected to cruel knitting experiments… The 1970s brought us many things—some remembered fondly, others with a collective wince. But the true horror of the 70s lies in the many and various crimes against style. Whatever the cause, an almost universal lack of restraint, coupled with a dearth of taste, led to some of the most ghastly and regrettable styles in fashion history. Most people have, of course, set fire to any photographic evidence of their grimmest fashion errors, so the author has had to search far and wide to track down some of the crotch-mangling, buttock-hugging, polyester numbers you find here. So sit back and enjoy this homage to fashion’s darkest hour. |

A First Family of Tasajara $12.27 Bret Harte is best known for his stories about pioneering life in California. Harte moved to California in 1853 where he worked as a miner, journalist, teacher and messenger. The story begins, “It blows,” said Joe Wingate. As if to accent the words of the speaker a heavy gust of wind at that moment shook the long light wooden structure which served as the general store of Sidon settlement, in Contra Costa. Even after it had passed a prolonged whistle came through the keyhole, sides, and openings of the closed glass front doors, that served equally for windows, and filled the canvas ceiling which hid the roof above like a bellying sail. A wave of enthusiastic emotion seemed to be communicated to a line of straw hats and sou-westers suspended from a cross-beam, and swung them with every appearance of festive rejoicing, while a few dusters, overcoats, and “hickory” shirts hanging on the side walls exhibited such marked hough idiotic animation that it had the effect of a satirical comment on the lazy, purposeless figures of the four living inmates of the store.” |

His subjects include spiritual icons, The Book of Kells, the Celtic Christian saints of Ireland, as well as historical people both past and present who have changed our world by living as they believed while affirming that we all share this same life. Wingate, a high school Latin teacher, began his paintings on shirts as a teaching tool. Student questions about the paintings opened discussions on ethics, cultures, and societies from classical times to the present. Forty full color photographs focus on the artist’s mature style and skill which illuminates each subject with life. The paintings on shirts are accompanied by annotations which reveal the meaning of icons, emphasize that women formed the foundation of the New Testament, and at times surprise us with the history of people and events that were left out of our education. “Carl Edmond Wingate’s painted shirts as photographed by MacKenzie, along with the informative and thoughtful text, form an unprecedented and compelling book…a spiritual communion with readers.” Gary Udd, PhD Language Arts. |

A Nurse’s Story $3.63 The team of nurses that Tilda Shalof found herself working with in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a big-city hospital was known as “Laura’s Line.” They were a bit wild: smart, funny, disrespectful of authority, but also caring and incredibly committed to their jobs. Laura set the tone with her quick remarks. Frances, from Newfoundland, was famous for her improvised recipes. Justine, the union rep, wore t-shirts emblazoned with defiant slogans, like “Nurses Care But It’s Not in the Budget.” Shalof was the one who had been to university. The others accused her of being “sooo sensitive.”They depended upon one another. Working in the ICU was both emotionally grueling and physically exhausting. Many patients, quite simply, were dying, and the staff strove mightily to prolong their lives. With their skill, dedication, and the resources of modern science, they sometimes were almost too successful. Doctors and nurses alike wondered if what they did for terminally-ill patients was not, in some cases, too extreme. A number of patients were admitted when it was too late even for heroic measures. A boy struck down by a cerebral aneurysm in the middle of a little-league hockey game. A woman rescued – too late – from a burning house. It all took its toll on the staff. And yet, on good days, they thrived on what they did. Shalof describes a colleague who is managing a “crashing” patient: “I looked at her. Nicky was flushed with excitement. She was doing five different things at the same time, planning ahead for another five. She was totally focused, in her element, in control, completely at home with the chaos. There was a huge smile on her face. Nurses like to fix things. If they can.”Shalof, a veteran ICU nurse, reveals what it is really like to work behind the closed hospital curtains. The drama, the sardonic humour, the grinding workload, the cheerful camaraderie, the big |

A Prayer Journey Through Deployment $8.5 When a soldier serves, so does the family.Donna Mull saw that statement on the shirts some military wives were wearing at a Fourth of July parade as they marched with their husbands. She then forwarded them to friends and family, who used them as springboards for their own prayer times. If you have a loved one in the military, chances are you are engaged in a battle of your own. Will your loved one survive? Will you? How will you cope while your soldier is away? When your soldier returns, will he or she be changed? |

A Splendid Exchange: How Trade Shaped the World $14 Adam Smith wrote that man has an intrinsic “propensity to truck, barter, and exchange one thing for another.” But how did trade evolve to the point where we don’t think twice about biting into an apple from the other side of the world? In this sweeping narrative history of world trade, William J. Bernstein tells the extraordinary story of global commerce from its prehistoric origins to the myriad controversies surrounding it today. He transports readers from ancient sailing ships that brought the silk trade from China to Rome in the second century to the rise and fall of the Portuguese monopoly in spices in the sixteenth; from the American trade battles of the early twentieth century to the modern era of televisions from Taiwan, lettuce from Mexico, and T-shirts from China. Lively, authoritative, and astonishing in scope, A Splendid Exchange is a riveting narrative that views trade and globalization not in political terms, but rather as an evolutionary process as old as war and religion—a historical constant—that will continue to foster the growth of intellectual capital, shrink the world, and propel the trajectory of the human species. |

Advertising Empire: Race and Visual Culture in Imperial Germany $42 At the end of the nineteenth century, Germany turned toward colonialism, establishing protectorates in Africa, and toward a mass consumer society, mapping the meaning of commodities through advertising. These developments, distinct in the world of political economy, were intertwined in the world of visual culture.David Ciarlo offers an innovative visual history of each of these transformations. Tracing commercial imagery across different products and media, Ciarlo shows how and why the “African native” had emerged by 1900 to become a familiar figure in the German landscape, selling everything from soap to shirts to coffee. The racialization of black figures, first associated with the American minstrel shows that toured Germany, found ever greater purchase in German advertising up to and after 1905, when Germany waged war against the Herero in Southwest Africa. The new reach of advertising not only expanded the domestic audience for German colonialism, but transformed colonialism’s political and cultural meaning as well, by infusing it with a simplified racial cast. The visual realm shaped the worldview of the colonial rulers, illuminated the importance of commodities, and in the process, drew a path to German modernity. The powerful vision of racial difference at the core of this modernity would have profound consequences for the future. |
